develop, the intrinsic microflora are either absent or, more likely, present at a very low titer. If they are present at a low level, they will not cause carrots to rot before the nematodes have increased, and they can be eliminated from the nematodes by surface-sterilization. Pratylenchus vulnus was originally obtained from around Juglans hindsii Jepson rootstock in a walnut orchard, and has been cultured 7 years in the laboratory. The first 4 years, the culture medium was a mixture of callus and differentiated alfalfa tissue (3). The last 3 years the medium was carrot disks. In 1971, nematodes with this history increased readily on J. hindsii and other fruit and nut tree rootstocks. There is no evidence that the 7 years of culture away from usual hosts has altered this nematode's ability to reproduce on those hosts. Previously, HcJgger (2) had reported no difference in infectivity on potato of P. penetrans from potato in the field, from 1973

A Study of Intersexuality in Drosophila Virilis.
N THIS paper a detailed account of our study of intersexuality in DroI sophila virilis will be given. The progress of this work has been reported elsewhere (LEBEDEFF 1934a and b, 1938a and b). These intersexes are the result of mutative changes within the normal diploid system, and they differ from intersexes in other species genetically, morphologically and embryologically. Intersexes in Lyman...
متن کاملIn vitro antibacterial activity of Scenedesmus obtusus (Meyen, 1829) extract
The aim of this study was to assay the antibacterial activity of Scenedesmus obtusus on some pathogenic bacteria. Microalgae S. obtusus were obtained from Algae Bank of Iran, and the methanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform and n-hexane extract of the microalgae were prepared using the maceration method. Bacterial strains were cultured in a solid culture medium, and antibacterial activity of the the...
متن کاملEat and run: anoxic feeding and subsequent aerobic recovery by Orchomene obtusus in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, Canada
The lysianassid amphipod Orchomene obtusus (Sars) is known as an epibenthic scavenger, but it is abundant in the water column of Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, a temperate fjord with poorly oxygenated deep water. Sampling with vertically-stratified nets and baited traps indicates that O. obtusus is abundant within the oxycline at 100 to 140 m, is present in anoxic deep waters at low abundance...
متن کاملThe Growth of the Gonads in DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER.
As shown by DOBZHANSKY and BRIDGES (1928), triploid intersexes in Drosophila may be considered as individuals developing up to a certain moment as males and thereafter as females. The earlier or later occurrence of the turning point in the development of an intersex determines the production of an individual manifesting relatively more male or relatively more female characteristics. If the turn...
متن کاملRedescription of three ektaphelenchus species (nematoda: aphelenchina).
Three Ektaphelenchus species with unusual spicules are redescribed. Ektaphelenchus obtusus and E. riograndensis are redescribed from newly discovered material in the collection of the USDA Forest Service RMRS. Lectotype slides are designated for both species. Ektaphelenchus obtusus is characterized by a set-off head, lips of unequal size, double rows of oocytes and spermatocytes, and a hooked s...
